Running with MVS

Coaching
We offer coaching and support at every level, from new runners looking to get in shape to seasoned road warriors seeking new PRs. With a staff of highly trained and qualified coaches, MVS seeks to provide the guidance necessary for you to safely become the best you can be. Every member is treated with respect, and our coaches are excited to help each member reach their goals and help make them endurance athletes for life! In addition to our Adult Coaching program, MVS is committed to developing the interest and capabilities of our youth. Our summer Youth Track program provides strength and conditioning training to kids from 8 to 18 an opportunity to develop strength and conditioning while having fun. We believe it is an important part of our mission statement to help our kids realize the joy of fitness. See our Youth Coaching section for more information.

Giving back
The Merrimack Valley Striders are active in the running community and in the community at large.

We host the Feaster Five, one of the largest races in Massachusetts which draws over 8,000 runners and walkers every Thanksgiving morning. In addition to supporting the MVS coaching programs (MVS is a registered 501c3 entity) our race helps raise money for worthy programs such as the Merrimack Valley Hospice House and the Merrimack Valley YMCA.
In conjunction with our affiliated triathlon club, TriFury, we participate in a program called Project Venture which allows members to work with inner city youth to help them recognize the positive benefits of good health and fitness through sport.
MVS each year awards area high school seniors scholarships. In 2008, we presented 8 seniors with $500 scholarships. Funds are awarded through our MVS Memorial Scholarship Program which is in memory and in honor of MVS members who have passed away.
MVS is a regular contributor to charitable causes that reflect our passion for good health such as the DMSE Children’s Fitness Foundation.

MVS Super Iron Runner Series
Of course, we wouldn’t be a running club if we didn’t run in races! Our members have competed in every imaginable event from local 5K’s to marathons and our members have run in races all over the world. Some of our runners find ultra marathons to be their favorite challenge, while some like cross-country or track, and some augment their running with triathlons, including those who have competed in Ironman events.
To promote camaraderie and provide a challenge, MVS created a 14 race series we call the “MVS Super Iron Series”. Seven of the races are the USA Track and Field New England Grand Prix events, and seven are lower key, shorter, family friendly events. At the end of the season, members are rewarded based upon participation – run at least 5 races and earn a high tech running shirts emblazoned with “Merrimack Valley Striders Racing Team”. The more races run, the more merchandise is earned. In 2008, 241 members participated in the series and five were crowned “Super Iron Runners” by completing all 14 events!

The Boston Marathon Experience
Because we are in the heart of running country, the world’s most famous and oldest continuing marathon, The Boston Marathon, holds a special place in our hearts. Many of our members run in the event as a result of setting that as a goal and having our coaching staff help them achieve the fitness level necessary to qualify for a number.
For many members, being able to complete a marathon is a reachable goal with proper training, but achieving a qualifying time for Boston might be impossible. MVS is granted “time waived” numbers that help many achieve the ultimate marathon thrill – the journey from Hopkinton to Boston!
Not everyone is interested in pounding away for 26.2 miles, of course, but that doesn’t mean those MVS members can’t participate in a different way. Because of our close relationship with the event, we have been granted exclusive opportunities to work at the event and earn the coveted Boston Marathon jacket!
MVS has special passes that allow us to provide coach bus transportation right to the starting line in Hopkinton. Only a small number of clubs have been accorded that special privilege, and our runners and start line volunteers love it!

It’s Only One Hill
For those who like their running to have a bit more of a challenge, one of the favorites in New England is the Mount Washington Road Race, 7.6 miles up the auto road to an elevation of 6,288 feet. Though it may be hard to believe, the race is limited in participants and the list fills up quickly. MVS, however, is granted guaranteed entry for a limited number of runners – usually enough to accommodate the hearty MVSers who need a number.

Hosted Runs
On most weeks, a member of MVS opens their homes to host a run on the weekend. Whether training for a marathon or looking for some company for a short jog, it’s a great way to spend some time with your MVS friends.
Additionally, numerous members have “mini hosted runs” – groups of folks who train at similar paces that meet at a regular location.

Membership has its advantages
With your membership, numerous discounts at various merchants are available -everything from YMCA membership discounts to discounts at local running stores. A complete list is available on the website.

The TriFury Affiliation
Looking to diversify your training? Thinking about new challenges? Triathlon training may fit the bill. Through our “sister club” TriFury, you can take advantage of a multitude of opportunities from cross training to full support in the sport of triathlon.
Be sure to check out our affiliate Triathlon club, TriFury.
