Coach Scott Ouellet
Scott Ouellet joined the MVS staff in the spring of 2009 and currently serves as an assistant in the Adult coach program and is also the coach of the MVS Youth Program. Additionally, Scott serves on the committee aimed at promoting Youth Running in the Merrimack Valley through the MVS Youth running grant initiatives. Scott is the longest tenured MVS coach who also helps promote the MVS brand through his high school team and their travels to large track meets and road races. Moreover, Scott directs the MVS Scholastic Program which is a collection of Merrimack Valley area HS & College aged athletes who team up in the summer to: run, train, socialize and race. The goal of the Scholastic Program is to foster an environment that follows the model of the adult side of the MVS.
During the day, Scott coaches Cross Country & the Men’s distance runners at Lowell High School. The Lowell distance running program is widely regarded as one of the most successful in all of New England. Scott joined the staff @ Lowell High in September of 2010 and since that time has helped elevate Lowell’s top notch program into 1 of the elite programs in the entire Northeast Region. Lowell was the MIAA All-State Runner-up in Cross Country during both 2010 & 2011. In 2010 they won the MIAA EMASS D1 title. During the HS track seasons Scott has helped guide his athletes to many Personal Best’s, school records, meet records, as well as State & Championship Meet accolades. In the spring of 2011, Scott took a group of athletes from Lowell to Greensboro, NC to compete in the National Scholastic HS Championship Meet. Representing the MVS, these athletes earned All-American honors in the 4xmile relay (this is the longest distance race in HS athletics).
Prior to joining the coaching staff in Lowell, Scott coached the Cross Country team and the Men’s Distance Runners @ Methuen HS for 9 years (2001-2010). In that time, he helped guide Methuen to an incredible dual meet record of 78-8 en route to winning 7 MVC Championships in XC, an MIAA EMASS D1 title in 2003 and having advanced to the All-State XC Championship in: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. The 2009 team was MIAA All-State Runner-up, missing the state title by a slim 4 points. Scott’s track athletes in Methuen flourished. Most notably, he helped guide the 4x800m relay team to the MIAA Division 1 and All-State titles in both 2006 and 2010. The 2006 team set an MIAA All-State Meet record that still stands. In addition to the MIAA accolades, the 2006 team won the New England HS Championship @ Willowbrook Park in New Britain, CT. In 2010 Scott took his championship team to Greensboro, NC and watched as his team, who were wearing MVS red uniforms race to a 6th place finish in the 4xmile relay (this is the longest distance race in HS athletics), thus gaining All-American honors. These athletes averaged 4:23 per man in the mile, setting a Massachusetts State Record that still stands today.
Scott speaks very proudly about his many athletes attending college and continuing with their running careers beyond HS. Scott has developed many great relationships with local & national college coaches and this network has helped him promote his athletes and assist them with the very important choice of where to matriculate for college. In many cases, these athletes have procured scholarship money and have been admitted to some of the finest institutions in the country.
Professionally, Scott is employed by the Lowell Public Schools as a Physical Education Teacher @ Lowell High School and was named to the prestigious “Who’s who Amongst America’s High School Teachers” in 2003, 2005 and 2009. Scott graduated from Lowell High in 1997, UMASS-Lowell in 2001 and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education. He has been teaching at his alma mater since September of 2001 when he was just a 22 year old rookie.
Scott also assists with various area running camps and helps coordinate many area road races. Additionally, Scott is a member of the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association and he helps play a role in setting a direction for the growth of the sport and its future. Fundamentally, Scott believes in fitness, developing great enthusiasm and a love for the sport of running. He credits much of his coaching success to some of the great mentors he has learned from including: Phil Maia, Roger Fuller and George Davis.
