On Saturday, June 14th, the Massachusetts Senior Games were held in Springfield, MA, and our very own Gerry Fennessey competed. Gerry competed in the 50 Meter Dash with a time of 8.75 seconds placing silver. The 100 Meter Dash with a time of 16.5 seconds placing gold. The 200 Meter Dash with a time of 36 seconds earning yet another gold! Way to go Gerry!!
Here's what Gerry had to say...
When did you start your training? I officially started training when the snow melted off the high school track this past spring.
What was your training schedule like? I've been sprinting 2 days a week and running 1 day a week with MVS. I also play basketball on Fridays.
Are there any other sports you do?
Other sports include basketball and racing my sailboat and drinking beer. :) Basketball is great for running. The trouble with basketball is the potential for injuries! Basketball is basically a sprint workout.
Would you encourage others to participate and compete?
Absolutely! If someone is already in good running shape and wants to work on their fast twitch muscles, there is no reason not to. Entry starts at 50 years old, but most are 60 or older and the games are open to men and women. Next year is a qualifier for the Nationals in 2027. My goal is to go to the Nationals.
The MVS coaches and track have been helpful and encouraging, especially Coach Paul!
Congratulations Gerry!! You are an inspiration!!
